Migrant Crime Reporting Act of 2026

This bill would have the Secretary of Homeland Security give $1,000,000 grants each year, starting in fiscal year 2027, to states that qualify. To qualify, a state must request a grant and must have posted online and sent to the Secretary a report for the prior year on the number of migrants charged with or convicted of crimes in the state. The bill defines a migrant as a person who cannot show certain documents, such as a green card, a U.S. birth certificate, a valid U.S. passport, or a certificate of citizenship or naturalization. States would use the money to collect and analyze data from local law enforcement agencies and would have to publish a report for each year they receive a grant. The bill adds these grants to a list of allowed uses of funds in a 2025 budget reconciliation law.
