This bill would make it illegal for immigration officers, including staff and contractors of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and local officers deputized for immigration work, to acquire, have, access, or use facial recognition or other biometric surveillance systems in the United States, or information from such systems run by others. All information these officers collected for or from such systems, including past data, would have to be deleted within 30 days of the law taking effect. Information gathered in violation of the law could not be used by the federal government in most investigations or court cases. People harmed by a violation could sue the federal government for damages and other relief, state attorneys general could sue on behalf of state residents, and officers who violate the law could face retraining, suspension, or firing.
