AI Fraud Accountability Act

Refreshed 4 h ago

Introduced 2026-03-04Topic: economy jobs

Summary

AI-generated summary, report an error

This bill would make it a federal crime to use a digital impersonation, such as an AI-generated image or voice of a real or imaginary person, to falsely pose as someone with intent to defraud others of money or other things of value. Violators could be fined, imprisoned for up to 3 years, or both, and would have to forfeit property tied to the crime; threatening to commit the offense would carry the same penalties. The Federal Trade Commission would also treat such fraud as an unfair or deceptive practice and could enforce against it. The bill would create a working group led by the National Institute of Standards and Technology to develop best practices for detecting and preventing this fraud, and would direct federal agencies to identify the top 10 foreign countries where violations originate and seek cooperation with them. It states that it does not restrict parody, satire, journalism, or other First Amendment rights.
